Marking May as Preservation Month, Mayor Sheila Dixon signed legislation on Wednesday adding the buildings to the landmark list and to open an exhibit about the newest landmarks in the North Gallery of City Hall. The additions bring to 153 the number of buildings that have city landmark designation, a status that helps protect them from demolition or defacement. Once a building is on the list, any changes must be approved by the city's Commission on Historical and Architectural Preservation. Some of the buildings were added for their architectural merit, while others were added because of their association with historical events or important people, including owners and architects. "The City of Baltimore cherishes these jewels because they are unique and authentic," Dixon said. "Our city is richer because we have so many landmarks." The latest additions include: 2. Castalia, 200 Tuscany Road, the former home of Calvert School ,headmaster Virgil Hillyer, design by Laurence Hall Fowler. 3. The Scottish Rite Temple at 3800 N. Charles Street, designed by John Russell Pope and still active as aMasonic temple. 4. The Raffel Building at 107 W. Heath St. 5. The "Four Bay" House at 1733 Aliceanna St. 6.
